Applications

To support our overall service offering, and to manage 3rd party suppliers, CommTel has developed a strong project management capability.

To ensure that our project management is effective, CommTel has developed a corporate culture, which is based on a disciplined and structured management process. This ensures that decisions are made based on sound information and in accordance with CommTel’s quality system requirements.

The telecommunications world has commenced a migration away from traditional Time Domain Multiplex (TDM) technology to Internet Protocol (IP/MPLS) and Ethernet based solutions. This new approach enables more powerful functionality, higher bandwidth and the ability to build all network layers using a single technology. However, this new approach introduces new challenges when implemented in “Industrial” and “Mission Critical” applications. Network security, high availability and deterministic performance have become areas of key focus and CommTel has invested substantially in IP/MPLS Engineering training, IP/MPLS Laboratory facilities and R&D to ensure appropriate industry performance is achieved.

In addition, CommTel is working closely with its R&D partner, Avara Technologies and major suppliers including Nokia Siemens Networks, Juniper and Dorardo to develop next generation industrialised communications equipment and management systems. Success from this collaboration has created products which Avara now supplies back to some of our partners through OEM arrangements.

Avara’s niche is in the development of next generation IP based products that also support traditional legacy interfaces (E1, VF E&M, serial data etc) with full Quality of Service guarantee.

These products also are developed to meet local industrial applications needs, further reduce cost and reliance on overseas vendors. Some of these products are the DFX and ESU families, and are targeted at adding next generation IP features to older traditional products like the Nokia Siemens Network’s Dynanet family while others are stand-alone next generation products for more advanced customers.

Recent success in winning major projects in the oil & gas, electric power and transport industries against giant international vendors has demonstrated the benefits of this joint venture. Companies already investing in CommTel’s Avara Technologies products include Energy Australia, Western Power, Downer Engineering for the Sydney Cross City Tunnel, Railway operators On-Track (NZ) and ARTC in Australia, Invensys Singapore for the prestigious PGN Indonesia to Singapore undersea gas pipeline project, Semco for oil & gas applications in the North Sea, Nokia Siemens Networks to enhance existing product capabilities and many others.

To ensure all CommTel integrated multi- vendor solutions can be managed by a single integrated advanced management system CommTel has invested in the development of a universal high level management platform named CNMS-NG.

This system developed in Melbourne by CommTel, enables customers to manage many different vendor products (Avara, Cisco, Ceragon, Ericsson, Juniper, MRV, NSN and many others) as if they are all from the one vendor and at a network level.
